Asthma Tip of the Month
October
Patty cake, patty cake, baker’s man
Put on your mask as snug as you can!
Getting babies and young children to cooperate with a spacer or nebulizer mask can be tricky, but is possible if you have a little determination and a lot of fun! Toddlers are often very opposed to having the mask touch their faces. Perhaps they are frightened of the mask or perhaps they are just being toddlers – who knows? But it is your job to make sure that asthma medicines are taken correctly.
Try adding some fun – play with the mask at times other than when you are giving a dose of inhaled medicine. Try putting it on a favorite doll or stuffed animal and letting your child “give” a treatment. Put it on your own face and act silly. Perhaps, decorate the mask with stickers or fun drawings.
Remember, we don’t want your child to fuss and cry their way through a treatment. If you are not successful in getting your child to accept the face mask, let your asthma care provider know so that we can consider adjusting your medicines. |
